PHLEBOTOMY PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Students must have a high school diploma, GED or transcript of work past high school (college or vocational school) and be 18 years old by the end of the classroom portion of the class. Students from other countries may be asked to prove English competency.
To get started
Students must schedule a short (30 minute) interview with admissions. Email or call to set up appointment during office hours.
- One class a week for 10 weeks
- 4.5 hours – half lecture half lab
- 40 hour, one week clinical externship
Students put in between 7-10 hours per week in home study – reading and homework. Memorization is required. Externships are done at various approved Labcorp locations around the Orlando area. There is some ability to do weekends as well as Monday through Friday. A 40 hour week is required. We will work with students to schedule their externship if they need to take a week off from their current job. Students working in a healthcare facility can make arrangements to do their externship where they work.
Students must have verification of the following immunizations or immunity to the following diseases before being placed in an externship. These immunizations are also required to get any job in healthcare that works with patients. Students are also required to have health insurance.
Students must have the first and second Hepatitis B immunizations. (Hep B is a three part immunizations.)
MMR (measles “rubeola”, mumps. rubella):
Students must show proof of at least two MMR immunizations during their lifetime and/or provide lab results that show proof of immunity.
Varicella (chicken pox):
Students must show proof of immunity to Varicella – have a physicians record of having the disease or proof of immunization.
PPD (tuberculosis skin test):
Students must show evidence of a negative PPD (tuberculosis) test within the past 6 months. If they have a history of positive PPD test, they must show a negative chest x-ray within the past 6 months.
